end of the decade and...
So I keep reading these end of the year/decade ‘best of’ lists- the best movies, the best music, the unforgettable moments, etc.
And I thought about adding my own little list, put it down for posterity and what have you… but I honestly can’t remember. Sure, there are a couple of highlights, several albums that were super meaningful at particular moments, but yeah…...

Food is Freedom- LaDonna Redmond
To change our food system, we need to change the way we talk about it. There is a pervasive idea in the sustainable-food movement that simply returning to a food system of the past would right all that is wrong in the food world. However, history does not show that there has ever been a time when our food system was fair or just. Reflecting through my eyes, the eyes of an African-American woman, I...

Remember all the times you crashed my computer using it to go on Manhunt and rebooted it incorrectly and lost my papers and stuff? And you apologized and that was cool but then one time you told me that I was the kind of girl that guys dated for her personality?
I made nice with you for the rest of the year but bitch, I’m still mad.
All the other gays in town used to talk behind you...

Is 'Glee' a Little Bit Racist? →
is this a rhetorical question?
chuffedlittlezombie:
I know I have been in academic/grad student mode for a bit, for which I forgive myself and hope you will forgive me in turn. But really, we grad students are artists, and we’re sensitive about our shit.* Simple questions like “What are you writing on?” or “How’s the writing going?” are emotional minefields. BECAUSE WE ARE WRITING AS BEST WE CAN GODDAMMIT WE ARE TRYING.

"When Will White People Stop Making Movies Like...
If we think of Avatar and its ilk as white fantasies about race, what kinds of patterns do we see emerging in these fantasies?
In both Avatar and District 9, humans are the cause of alien oppression and distress. Then, a white man who was one of the oppressors switches sides at the last minute, assimilating into the alien culture and becoming its savior. This is also the basic story of Dune,...

A marvelous painting of a gourmand at his table hangs in the Musée Carnavalet in Paris — a portly, pink-faced figure happily gorging on a regal casserole, with a bottle of wine at one elbow and a luscious-looking soufflé at the other. It is traditionally believed to be a portrait of Alexandre-Balthazar-Laurent Grimod de la Reynière, an aristocrat notorious in Napoleonic France...

damn. my final play must have sucked shit for me to get a B+ in playwriting. c’mon stephanie! however, i put about only half the effort into all my classes this quarter versus 100%, can’t believe i got an A- in mendes’ class tho. I'm so ready for menopause.
neurotical:
Seriously, twenty more years of this shit? I had my kids. I don’t want anymore. And don’t get me wrong, I’m very grateful I have them and was able to have them with little difficulty, but I’m done. And I’m too old to sell my eggs. (Not that there aren’t other, bigger issues that would make me an undesirable candidate.) I just don’t want any more cotton or strings or dry weave...

a gift subscription to a local CSA (community supported agriculture) group.
in these groups, people buy a “share” of a farm’s yield - usually in the form of weekly boxes of seasonal produce, but sometimes cheese or eggs or meats. membership in the CSA directly supports a local business, lets the farmer have a reliable and constant cash flow, and lets the consumer learn about local...

Polish artists Szymon Rogiński and Kasia Korzeniecka release images of their latest activist undertaking ‘Fair Trade’. The work consists of three collages all of which refer explicitly to child labour exploitation around the world. Each piece uses different materials targeting specific manufacturing sectors involved in child labour and uses those materials to construct images of the...
two questions
1. After trying to find a new Tumblr theme and unsuccessfully settling on one, I’m curious— what theme you like / use, and why? For maximum readability, because it’s a catchy design, because it’s minimalist… why? I’m really curious. FYI, I’ve been using “black and blue” until recently.
2. How the hell do you embed a question/poll option on...
South Africa: Cape Town a racist city →
puretheory:
Surprise! Hey random white South African guy, I bet you’re mad that you, in your shocking state of oppression, were forced to move all the way to North America or Europe when you could have just relived the good old days back home. I hate it when that happens.
Remind me to tell you why I hate Invictus and Clint Eastwood.
chuffedlittlemuffin:
Do you love me? Do you love you? I don’t love myself, and if I don’t love myself, how the hell am I gonna love anyone else?
